Dear Prospective Grant Applicant:
The grant application deadline for 2009 is Friday, August 15, 2008. If you want to receive a 2009 grant application please contact our office at 732-247-8222 or complete the Request for a 2009 IOLTA Grant Application and fax it to 732-247-6868. Applications are usually available by the first week of June and we will send yours as soon as it is ready. The grant period is from January 1, 2009 to December 31, 2009.
Last year’s application forms are available on this website for you to view. The 2009 application will not be posted until the printed applications are mailed.
Completed applications must be submitted on paper. We do not accept applications via email or fax. There are a variety of technical documents required, including your organization’s Form 990, NJ Charitable Registration and Annual Report, By-laws, and Certificate of Incorporation. A current audited financial statement is mandatory for grant requests of $12,000 or more.
IOLTA grants may only be awarded for the following three purposes:
- Civil (not criminal) legal services to the poor in New Jersey,
- improvement in the administration of justice in New Jersey, and
- education of lay persons in legal and justice-related area
Note that “education of lay persons” refers to information and assistance given to individuals or groups of individuals with specific legal problems, and not to projects delivering educational programming.
Please review the IOLTA Grant Policies, Basic Eligibility Criteria, Grant Priorities, and Audit Requirements to determine which category fits your project best and that you can meet our financial and reporting requirements. We receive applications each year describing projects that revolve around the criminal court system, including juvenile justice, sexual assault and the like. These do not fit our first grant priority which is to assist people with civil legal problems.
Thank you for your interest in the IOLTA Discretionary Grant program. Please call me at 732-247-8222 if you are a first-time applicant or if you have any questions regarding the application, grant process, deadline or any other aspect of the IOLTA program.
Sincerely,
Ellen D. Ferrise
